This free lesson for Sunday School teaches kids key parts of the Bible in fun ways. It includes a story and a few activities, all aimed at helping them grow in confidence when reading the Bible.
STORY:
There once was a boy named Luke, and he was starting his first day at kids church. He was so nervous because he didn’t know anyone and didn’t know much about church or the bible. When it was time for the name game, he said shyly to the class in a whisper. “My name is Luke''. His teacher then smiled and said, “Luke! That's just like the book in the bible”.
“What?!” Luke thought he didn't know that his name was a book in the bible. Later he ran home and found his moms bible, searching as hard as he could for his name. He was flipping through the pages so fast that he ripped one! He looked and he looked but he couldn’t find it. He began to get very frustrated. After a good 10 minutes he then found the words printed on the page “Luke”, however when he tried to read what it was about, he couldn't understand what it said...
LESSON (ACTIVATION):
ACTIVITY 1:
Use a Bible, share your screen and go to an online Bible, or put up a big screenshot poster of an online Bible to show kids how to:
Use the list of contents to see Old Testament and New Testament
See what is a name of a book of the Bible
See what is a chapter number
See what is a verse number
Then have a speed test between 2 teams, where you say a Scripture reference (e.g. 1 Kings chapter 3 verse 10) and start a timer, a volunteer from each team needs to quickly find it while their time mates cheer them on. When they find it, they need to shout out the page number! Or they could shout out “Bible Jibble Jabble” or something funny like that.
- bring 2 Bibles and a stopwatch and a whistle
ACTIVITY 2:
Sidewalk Chalk - Read a story from the Bible then illustrate it on the driveway or sidewalk with chalk (or alternative giant poster paper). Have a teacher in each group read the story and have the children illustrate it.

Story 1: Noah’s Ark (younger) There came a time when there was only one good man in all the world, and his name was Noah. Everybody else was bad. God wanted to start over fresh. So He told Noah to build an ark. And Noah did. God told Noah to fill the animals—two of every kind. And Noah did. Noah went aboard too. Then God made the rain come down. It rained and rained until there was a great flood that covered the world. Only those who were in the ark were safe and dry. Then God made the sunshine and dry up the rain. Everyone in the ark came out. Noah said: “Look! God has sent us a sign in the sky. It means that He will never flood the world again.” The sign in the sky was the very first rainbow.
Story 2: Daniel in the Lions den (older kids) Darius became the ruler over Babylon. He loved Daniel and wanted to make him leader over all the kingdom. Some of the king’s wise men were jealous. The wise men knew Daniel prayed to God, so they tricked the king into making a new law. Anyone who prayed to God would be thrown into a lion’s den. Daniel chose to pray to God anyway, so he was thrown into the lions’ den. Early the next morning, the king rushed to the lions’ den. He called Daniel to see if he was still alive. Daniel called back! He told the king that God sent an angel to shut the lions’ mouths. The lions did not hurt him. The king was happy that Daniel was safe. He taught his kingdom about God’s power and goodness.
Story 3: David and Goliath David was a shepherd boy who lived in Israel. He took care of sheep. One day a terrible giant named Goliath started bragging to his soldier friends that none of the Jews would dare to fight him. And he was right. The Jewish soldiers were all afraid of big Goliath. What would happen to the Jewish people? Then little David said: “I’ll fight Goliath. God will help me.” And he went and got some stones for his slingshot. The giant just laughed at him. David put a stone in his sling and flung it. The stone hit big Goliath on the head. All of Goliath’s friends ran away. God made David brave!
