Ice-breakers about having faith
When it’s difficult to have faith
We are going to practice the importance of complete trust through a few fun activities.
Go into small groups and have them do a “trust fall” with each other
Blindfold someone and have the rest of the kids shout out instructions to help them find something or do a specific task.
Tweak this game for older kids:
To make the game a bit more complicated for older kids (or youth group), you can create an obstacle course. The rest of your youth ministry teens need to guide the person going through the obstacle course by giving only the following instructions: Up, Down, Forward, Back.
Teach them about the Holy Spirit’s voice often is like a soft whisper or our gut feeling, yet if we listen to it in times of transition, we can practice true faith. Assure them of the trustworthiness of God by sharing a testimony from your own life.
Object Lesson on Faith for Sunday School
Skit:
The Teacher walks in and looks like they are afraid of something. “You will never guess what I saw outside! I was just walking around when I saw the leaves of a tree MOVE without anything touching it! How is that possible?” … “And you know what? The other day I popped a balloon to see what’s inside it and there was… nothing! nada! zilch!” … “It gets worse. Yesterday my hat jumped off my head. Nobody touched it or anything, it just decided to leap off and run away…”
Teacher turns to kids now: What do you think might be happening?
Answer: The WIND is blowing in the trees. There is AIR in the ballon. And the hat? The WIND again.
The Teacher looks confused again and goes back into character. “But how do you know the wind is real? You can’t see it. Maybe you can feel it a little, but how do you even know it is real.”
Allow the kids to answer, and do a back and forth like this for as long as their attention span allows 🙂
Key takeaway:
The point is that we also cannot see God, but we can see His hand in our lives. We can see everything He created, the miracles He does, and we can feel the love He pours out over us. THAT is exactly what faith is all about!
Fun Lesson
The truth about faith
Let’s read from the Bible. This is what it says in the New Testament book of Hebrews:
Chapter 11 verses 1 and 6 says: Faith is what makes real the things we hope for. It is proof of what we cannot see.Without faith no one can please God. Whoever comes to God must believe that he is real and that he rewards those who sincerely try to find him.
What can we learn?
We can’t do any great things without faith!
The writer of Hebrews tells us that faith is putting our future hopes in God’s hands and trusting that they are safe there. In the Kingdom of God, we need faith to survive. It’s the oxygen we breathe.
Do you know what is amazing? Faith is God’s gift to us. We don’t have to summon it up from within ourselves, He even gives us the faith to believe in His goodness.
We don’t have faith because we want God’s blessings. The people in the Bible faced such opposition and they still had faith in God. A little faith goes a long way.
But what does faith look like?
Faith might look like the following:
Maybe you are praying and trusting that God will lead you on the right path, even when it seems impossible.
Perhaps you pray before taking the next step and rely on God’s guidance.
Even when there is no evidence of things working out, you still have peace that God has GOT IT.
Game about Faith
No Sunday School Lesson on Faith is complete without some practical activity. For today’s game, the kids will use a map and some clues to find items that the teacher has hidden around the room / space. Once they’ve found everything, ask them the following questions:
How did you find everything?
Did you consider I would trick you and give false clues?
Was it difficult for you to trust the map?
Why did you have so much faith in the clues?
Did you also trust the other classmates to help you?
Do you find it easy to trust people? And God?
Arts and crafts
Our Key Bible verse of the day is from the book of Hebrews chapter 11. This is sometimes called the “Hall of Fame of Faith”. There’s an awesome list of God’s people from the Old Testament who had great faith. These heroes of faith did amazing things for God’s Kingdom because they understood today’s lesson. These people are like the family members of God.
For today’s activity, we will learn about the people of God who had great faith and create cut-out silhouettes of each one. The idea is that they cut out the silhouette and draw in the picture.Use the downloadable picture below for the silhouettes or draw your own on construction paper.
1: Enoch ascended into heaven because he had faith
“ Enoch was carried away from this earth, so he never died. The Scriptures tell us that before he was carried off, he was a man who pleased God. Later, no one knew where he was, because God had taken Enoch to be with him. This all happened because he had faith. ” (verse 5)
2: Noah built a great ark because he had faith in God
“Noah was warned by God about things that he could not yet see. But he had faith and respect for God, so he built a large boat to save his family. With his faith, Noah showed that the world was wrong. And he became one of those who are made right with God through faith.” (verse 7)
3: Sarah (an old lady) holding her baby because they had faith
“Noah was warned by God about things that he could not yet see. But he had faith and respect for God, so he built a large boat to save his family. With his faith, Noah showed that the world was wrong. And he became one of those who are made right with God through faith.” (verses 11 and 12)
4:Moses on dry land in the Red Sea because he had faith
“Moses grew up and became a man. He refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. He chose not to enjoy the pleasures of sin that last such a short time. Instead, he chose to suffer with God’s people. He did this because he had faith. He thought it was better to suffer for the Messiah than to have all the treasures of Egypt. He was waiting for the reward that God would give him. Moses left Egypt because he had faith.
He was not afraid of the king’s anger. He continued strong as if he could see the God no one can see. Moses prepared the Passover and spread the blood on the doorways of the people of Israel, so that the angel of death would not kill their firstborn sons. Moses did this because he had faith. And God’s people all walked through the Red Sea as if it were dry land. They were able to do this because they had faith. But when the Egyptians tried to follow them, they were drowned.” (verses 25-29)
Ask the kids to give you an example of someone else in the Bible who had great faith…
Powerful Verses Teaching Faith in God
There are countless Bible stories that capture the great value of having faith. God’s Word is full of great principles of faith that we can hold onto. If the key verse of today’s lesson did not resonate with you, consider using one of the following verses:
Matthew 21:22 – And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.
Luke 1:37 – For nothing will be impossible with God.
2 Corinthians 5:7 – For we walk by faith, not by sight.
Romans 10:17 – So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Ephesians 2:8-9 – For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Mark 11:22-24 – And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

I hope you enjoyed this hands-on Sunday School lesson on Faith. Let me know in the comments below if I need to make any changes or, if you tried it out, how did it go?
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. I myself am convinced, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, complete in knowledge and competent to instruct one another.”
